FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2011-2012 FLU SEASON

NASAL FLU and FLU SHOTS now available

WHEN IS THE VACCINE AVAILABLE?
Family Wellness Center has their seasonal flu vaccine in stock and has already begun scheduling flu vaccinations. The vaccine this year is exactly the same strains as last year which contains the H1N1 strain so that only one vaccine is needed. This does not mean that patients do not need to get the vaccine this year; it is still recommended that everyone over age 6 months receive a dose every year.

WHO SHOULD RECEIVE THE FLU VACCINE?
It is recommended that EVERYONE OVER 6 MONTHS OF AGE receive the regular flu vaccine. We do know that peak flu season is February thru March so that by giving the flu shot in September, the vaccine will continue to provide protection through the peak and end of the flu season. Evidence from clinical trials suggests that protection against influenza from the vaccine extends at least 6 to 8 months.

AVAILABILITY -- We stock 3 types of FLU VACCINE this season:

1. NASAL FLU (live vaccine) for age 2 yrs up to the 49th birthday. Nasal flu should NOT be given to anyone with asthma, any chronic respiratory condition, any other chronic disease, and diabetes, are immunocompromised, or have contact with immunocompromised individuals, or are pregnant. Nasal flu is repeated in 6 weeks for a second dose for children 2 years up to 9 years. We encourage all parents to seriously consider giving nasal flu to their children as it has an increased immune response for children age 2 and older. For adults, the immune response is usually better with the injectable vaccine.

2. FLUZONE injectable, MULTIDOSE VIAL, WITH PRESERVATIVE for age 19th birthday and older. In Washington State flu shots cannot be given to anyone younger than 3 yrs. if it contains a preservative, and it cannot be given to anyone who is pregnant or has an allergy to Thimerisol.

3. FLUZONE, 0.25 ml, prefilled syringe PRESERVATIVE FREE for age 6 months to 3 years. (NOTE: Two doses or 0.5 ml. is used for any child older than 3 years whose parent requests preservative free vaccine, or .5 ml is also used for pregnant teenagers who require a preservative free vaccine.)

All children who are receiving their first dose of flu and are 6 months up to 9 years should come back in 1 month for their 2nd dose of injectable vaccine. Nasal flu is repeated in 6 weeks for their second dose for children 2 years up to 9 years. Most parents make an appointment for the return flu vaccine before they leave the clinic.

WHICH PATIENT POPULATION WILL WE GIVE FLU SHOTS TO?
1. All of our established patients who request or indicate there is a need.
2. New Patients who are being seen for something besides or in addition to flu shots.
3. Family Members of our established patients but who have never been seen by our providers.

***FWC will not be providing flu shots OR nasal flu for new individuals who just call or walk in for a flu vaccine only. These individuals need to establish as a patient by being seen at an office visit with a chief complaint. Pharmacies and other healthcare agencies are providing the flu vaccine only.

PAYMENT & BILLING:
If a patient has no insurance, the $20 injectable flu shot fee is due at the time of service. All other patients will have their insurance billed.

If you are an established patient, please direct your questions to our clnical staff. THANKS!
